Hiidenmäki conservation area
The Hiidenmäki conservation area is located near the Jämsä city center. At the conservation area you can find an Iron Age burial ground protected by the Finnish law of Ancient monuments.
A beautiful view to the river valley and the Jämsänjoki river can be observed from the Hiidenmäki cliff. The Hiidenmäki conservation area spreads for two hectares.
The core of the conservation area is a rocky crag, its upper pineforest and a rocky grove below the crag. The tree stand on the area can be defined as an aging rocky forest consisting of pines and deciduous trees. More precisely, you can find such trees as Finnish pine trees, birches, European bird cherries, grey alders and sorbuses on the upper area of the crag. On the area below the crag one can also find elder and redcurrant bushes spread by birds.
The aging forest is a great place for decaying trees to be without being chopped down. However, the most outstanding thing and what makes the Hiidenmäki conservation area unique is the endangered Cetrelia olivetorum (röyhelökarve).
